Guilbert, Ray lead the way for H-DNL on opening day at MOC

Three H-DNL boys placed in the top seven in the shot put to lead a strong showing for the league on the opening day of the NCS Meet of Champions at Dublin High School on Friday.

A pair of juniors set the tone.

Eureka’s Jamin Guilbert placed fifth with a throw of 50 feet, 5.75, one spot ahead of McKinleyville’s Derrick Ray, who threw 49.10.

Both athletes saved their best for their biggest meet of the season, with each setting a PR.

Eureka senior Josh Mahle also had a string showing in the event, finishing seventh with a throw of 49.07, while teammate Joseph Gonzalez was 15th.

Del Norte senior Teresa Martinez also had a good opening day at the prestigious meet and placed ninth in the girls pole vault (9-06), while St. Bernard’s sophomore Madelyn Shanahan placed 11th in the discus with a throw of 97-11.

Fortuna senior Tristan Jones also competed in the discus and placed 16th.

Another Del Norte senior, Edwin Zepeda, capped a big debut season in prep track and field with a 14th-place finish in the boys triple jump, four spots ahead of Fortuna sophomore Russell Pascascio.

Rounding out a good opening day for the local contingent, Del Norte’s Lily Sherman placed 17th in the girls triple jump, the first of two events the Warriors sophomore is scheduled to compete in this weekend.
