St. Bernard’s sophomore Madelyn Shanahan has advanced to this week’s Meet of Champions after a pair of top-two finishes at the North Coast Section Class A Track and Field Championships at Montgomery High School on Saturday.
Shanahan placed first in the discus with a throw of 96 feet, 4.25 inches, and was the only H-DNL winner at the meet.
She also placed second in the triple jump with a jump of 32-08.25 and capped a strong all-around day by placing seventh in the long jump.
Shanahan is one of 20 H-DNL athletes who will compete at the prestigious Meet of Champions at Dublin High School on Friday and Saturday, but the only Little 4 athlete who will make the trip.
Her St. Bernard’s teammate Carl Nunes also qualified in the long jump after placing second at the Class A meet, but will be unable to compete because of his commitment to the school’s baseball team which is playing in the NCS playoffs that day.
The multi-sport standout had a PR of 21-08 and remarkably is closing in on the school record in just his third-ever time competing in the event.
Ferndale’s Isaak Kasso qualified for the MOC in the triple jump, but also will be unable to make the trip because of a minor injury.
The standout sophomore placed third in the triple jump at the Class A meet with a PR jump of 40-06.75, as well as placing fifth in the 110 meter hurdles and 12th in the 100m.
Other Little 4 athletes who competed at the Class A championships included St. Bernard’s freshman Rory Bickmore, who placed fifth in the discus and 11th in the shot put, as well as sophomore teammate Rihana Fontenot-Cornely, who was 12th in the 200m and 18th in the 100m.
St. Bernard’s freshman Siena Bullock-Martinez also placed eighth in the long jump with a PR of 15-02.
The top three in each event at the MOC will advance to next week’s CIF State Championships.
