By Ray Hamill — The Del Norte Warriors will get another chance to take on Big 5 champs Eureka on Thursday after a comfortable 16-1 win over South Fork in the opening round of the Charlie Lakin Tournament at the Arcata Sports Complex on Wednesday.
Few teams have matched up as well against the high-flying Loggers this season as the Warriors, who pushed them close in all three league losses.
The two teams will face off once again in the Charlie Lakin semifinal at 5 p.m. in Arcata, with a spot in this year’s championship game up for grabs.
The Warriors comfortably got the better of the Cubs on Wednesday, with Audrey Phillips leading the way at the plate and finishing 3-for-4.
Teammate Josephine Heuberger was 2-for-3 and Izzy Schrader finished 2-for-4.
McKenna Curtis pitched three innings for the win, allowing just one hit and striking out five.
Freshman Shay Nolan pitched two innings in relief to help seal the win, allowing one hit and striking out three.
The two pitchers got plenty of support from their defense, which played an errorless game.
The Warriors are now 15-8 on the season.
The Cubs are now 9-12 and will now turn their attention to next week’s North Coast Section playoffs.
