The Eureka girls notched their 20th win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, while claiming at least a share of the Big 5 championship in softball.
The Loggers defeated Arcata 10-1 at Washington Elementary School and improved to 20-1 overall and 9-1 in the Big 5 with two games remaining.
With their closest challengers in league play — the McKinleyville Panthers (7-3) — also winning on Wednesday, the Eureka girls still need at least one more win to secure the league pennant outright.
They will get the chance for that decisive victory in a league finale doubleheader at Arcata on Saturday.
Junior Kira Morris continued to impress in the pitcher’s circle on Wednesday, throwing a two-hitter for the win and striking out six in a complete game.
The Loggers ace is now 18-0 on the season with 182 strikeouts in 115.1 innings.
She also had a good day at the plate, finishing 1-for-3 with a two-run home run.
Senior McKenna Beach also had a big day and finished 3-for-4 with a double, while talented sophomore Kaitlin Giacone continued to impress and finished 1-for-4 with a three-run inside-the-park home run.
Freshman Jenna Renteria had both of the Tigers hits, as a young Arcata team dropped to 1-9 in the Big 5 and 4-11 overall.
Wednesday’s win was the 11th straight for the Eureka girls.
