Raina Ausburn pitched a three-hitter and the McKinleyville Panthers kept their slim Big 5 hopes alive with a 10-0 win over Fortuna in five innings at Mack High on Wednesday.
Ausburn struck out nine batters and grew stronger as the game went on, and the Panthers offense gave her some early run support that would prove decisive with four runs in the first inning.
Playing her final home regular season game, Mack senior Allie Egbert led the way at the plate and finished 2-for-2 with a double and three runs, while teammate Kennedy Minton also had a big day and finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
Taya Gomes added a pair of hits in the win, and Trinity Preston finished 1-for-3 with three runs.
Ausburn, Bailee Box and Rebecca Barnett each also had a hit, as the Panthers improved to 7-3 in the Big 5 with two league games remaining.
Faith Helms finished 1-for-1 with a double for the Huskies, who had their chances to score early in the game but left five runners stranded in the first two innings before Ausburn took control.
Kelsie Hall and Catherine Duncan each also was 1-for-2 for the visitors, who dropped to 2-8 in the Big 5 and 11-10 overall.
The Mack girls, who are now 12-6 overall, can still be crowned co-champs of the Big 5, although it would appear unlikely.
They would have to win their final two games at Fortuna on Saturday and hope the Loggers (9-1) drop their final two games at Arcata.
