Redwoods players receive all-conference honors

By Ray Hamill — Taylor Steig’s big season for the Corsairs did not go unnoticed.

The freshman first baseman from Santiago High in Corona is coming off an outstanding spring for the College of the Redwoods baseball team and was named to the all-conference first team while also finishing second in the Conference Player of the Year voting.

Steig led the Golden Valley Conference in average (.434) and RBIs (48) and was second with seven home runs.

He also had a team-high 14 doubles.

Steig was one of five Corsairs to receive all-conference recognition.

Outfielder Jake Agarwal was also named to the all-GVC first team, while pitcher Chandler Jones and infielder Evan Stauch were both named to the all-conference second team and pitcher/utility player Grant Lasserre was given an honored mention.

Agarwal had a big season offensively and averaged .359 at the plate, while Stauch averaged .325 with 22 RBIs and three home runs.

Jones, who had an ERA of 4.59, posted four of the Corsairs’ 11 wins on the mound and suffered just two losses, while Lasserre had three saves with an ERA of 4.54 and also averaged .270 at the plate.

Feather River’s Jerry Thomas was named conference player of the year.
