The Del Norte Warriors continued to build momentum ahead of next week’s league opener in baseball after shutting out Gold Beach 10-0 in six innings on Wednesday.

Junior Cole Blackburn pitched four strong shutout innings for the win, allowing just two hits and striking out five.

Fellow junior Sylas Samples was equally effective in relief, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out three.

Freshman Aidan Rice led the way at the plate and finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a pair of runs.

“I’m proud of the way the boys are coming together,” head coach Roger Schultz said. “The communication is coming along. Their timing is getting better and the defensive involvement of every player on every ball put in play is getting smoother.”

The Warriors played solid defense with no errors, with another freshman, Preston Daniels, providing the defensive highlight of the day.

The centerfielder showed the strength of his arm by throwing out a Gold Beach runner attempting to go from first to third on a double in the fourth inning.

With the win, the Warriors improved to 3-2 on the season.

The Del Norte boys, who were 1-2 at last weekend’s Yreka tournament, will open the Big 5 at Fortuna next Wednesday.
