The Humboldt Composite Mountain Bike Club (HCMTB) got the 2022 season off to an impressive start over the weekend after making the trip to the Exchequer Mountain Bike Park near La Grange, CA, east of Modesto.
A total of 15 local racers made the trip for the first NorCal MTB-NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) race of the year, including three middle schoolers for the first time.
Competing against an overall field of around 1,000 racers at the two-day event, the local contingent posted some notable results.
In the JV girls race, Maggie Odell beat out a field of 51 riders to place first and take over the series leader jersey, while teammate Camille Shaver placed 40th in her first-ever race.
In the sophomore girls race, which featured a field of 23, Sierra Paliaga finished 11th and Sasha Love 16th.
Isaac Johnson led the way for the HCMTB in the JV boys race, finishing an impressive seventh out of 74 racers, while Lane Corse was 22nd, Aaron Shapiro 11th, Malcolm Seeman 24th, Daniel Shaver 33rd, and Kai Lamb 34th.
In the sophomore boys race, which featured a field of 60, Nico Costanzo finished 23rd and Brandon Stephens was 40th.
The weekend event was the first of five Nor-Cal League races this season, and this is the first year that middle schoolers are competing.
