Record-setting night for CR, as men and women both win

Submitted photo – The CR men celebrate their championship after beating Shasta College last week.

The two-time conference champions closed out with a bang on Wednesday night.

Playing a make-up game against Lassen at Shasta College, the College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team set a school-record for most 3-pointers in a game with 24, on the way to a 110-56 win.

“We couldn’t be happier heading into the playoffs coming off this offensive outburst,” head coach Ryan Bisio said. “What a confidence building experience at the perfect time.”

Brandon Lucas led the way offensively with 23 points, while Drew Gillette added 20 points, as the Corsairs won their ninth straight conference game to close out 9-1.

The CR men, who go into the playoffs with an overall record of 19-5, had already clinched the conference title outright.

“Our ball and body movement — along with our commitment to connecting actions — contributed to that historic shooting performance,” Bisio added. “The music was underneath us all night on the offensive end.”

The points total was a season-high for the team and the sixth time the CR men have surpassed the century mark this winter.

Zac Claus added 14 points in the win and Jon Nchekwube chipped in 11.

The Corsairs will find out their playoff seed and opponent on Sunday and are hoping to have a home game next week.

“Our guys done’t have a voice in their seed selection Sunday, but they spoke resoundingly tonight about the level of ball they’re playing,” Bisio said.

CR women 65, Lassen 62

The CR women also closed out the regular season with a victory over Lassen at Shasta on Wednesday.

Ashley Quigley scored a team-high 19 points while Makaila Napoleon added 18 points and Kathryce Danzuka had 15 points.

With the win, the Corsairs improved to 7-3 in conference and 18-9 overall.

The CR women had already guaranteed themselves second place in the GVC outright, behind unbeaten champion Butte.
