VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS — Red-hot Arcata girls set up key Big 5 showdown

By Ray Hamill — The Arcata Tigers kept their title hopes alive with a comprehensive win at McKinleyville in girls basketball on Tuesday night.

A 65-42 victory over their biggest rivals, coupled with Eureka’s 47-45 loss at Fortuna, leaves the door open for the Tigers in their pursuit of a Big 5 championship.

With the win, their fourth straight, the Arcata girls improved to 3-2 in the Big 5 with three games remaining, while Eureka dropped to 5-1 with two games remaining.

The two title contenders will face off in a pivotal showdown at Eureka High on Thursday night, where a win for the Loggers will secure them the Big 5 title.

A win for Arcata, however, will throw the race wide open heading into the final week of play.

Eureka will close out league play at home to McKinleyville next Tuesday, while Arcata must also play at home to Del Norte (Tuesday) and at Fortuna (Feb. 3).
