BOYS BASKETBALL — Sophomores shine as Cubs take over top spot in L4

File photo – The South Fork Cubs improved to 2-0 in the Little 4 on Friday night.

The South Fork boys took over sole possession of top spot in the Little 4 with a 71-56 win over Ferndale on Friday night.

The shorthanded Cubs got big performances from a pair of sophomores, including the in-form Tommy Rotbergs, who finished with a team-high 24 points.

Rotbergs helped kickstart his team after a slow start and scored 12 of his tally in the second quarter as the Cubs began to take control of the game with 27 points for the period.

Fellow sophomore Shevy Bero also had a big night and “did a great job facilitating our offense,” according to head Taylor Morrow.

Bero finished with 14 points, including three 3-pointers.

“These two sophomores really played well,” Morrow said.

Likewise with the ever-dangerous Oliver Tatton, who finished with 16 points as the Cubs improved to 2-0 in the Little 4 and 8-1 overall.

“I’m proud of my team taking what I feel is a leap in our ability,” Morrow said.

Ferndale were led by junior Jack Westfall, who continued his outstanding season with a game-high 29 points.

Teammate Kannon Christiansen also had a good night with 14 rebounds and 11 points, while Trent Titus added eight points.

The Cubs will play at St. Bernard’s on Monday in a make-up game and a key L4 showdown.

The Crusaders are 1-1 in the Little 4.
