By Ray Hamill — It’s going to be a busy weekend on the local high school basketball courts, with several rescheduled games on tap.

No one will be busier than the McKinleyville girls, who returned to action on Wednesday night after a two-week break and will now play four games in five days between Friday and Tuesday.

The Panthers, who are 2-0 in the Big 5 and appear to be Eureka’s biggest challengers, will play at Fortuna on Friday night before hosting Eureka in a pivotal make-up game on Saturday night.

The Panthers will then have to play Arcata on back-to-back nights on Monday and Tuesday, including a make-up game from two weeks ago.

Also in action on Friday, the Eureka girls (3-0 in the Big 5) will play at Del Norte, while the Ferndale girls will try to keep their impressive run going when they host South Fork in the Little 4.

The Wildcats (2-0 in the Little 4) are the hottest team in the H-DNL and coming off a very impressive win over Eureka earlier this week.

If they can get the better of South Fork, they can then clinch at least a share of the league title when they play at St. Bernard’s next Thursday.

The Hoopa girls, meanwhile, have not played since Jan. 7, but are expected to return to action next week.

In Big 5 boys basketball, McKinleyville and Eureka will play a makeup game on Saturday night at Eureka High.

The Panthers (2-1 in the Big 5) are in the middle of a three-horse race for the pennant along with Arcata (3-1) and Del Norte (3-1).

On Thursday night, the Mack boys will host Fortuna, while Del Norte travels to Eureka and Arcata has a bye.

The St. Bernard’s and Hoopa boys game, which was scheduled for Thursday night, has been postponed, while St. Bernard’s will play a make-up game against South Fork on Monday night.

Also on Saturday, St. Bernard’s will host Arcata in boys and girls varsity non-conference games, with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.
