ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Juniors take center stage this week

Ray Hamill/ – Caden Vance in action for the Loggers on Tuesday night.

By Ray Hamill — A pair of juniors continued to play pivotal roles for their respective teams this week, and that gets them the nod for our Athletes of the Week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods athletics.

Ferndale’s Kyla Albee and Eureka’s Caden Vance are each enjoying outstanding seasons on the basketball court and both were pivotal once again in big wins for their teams on Tuesday night.

Vance scored 30 points to lead the Loggers to a 63-53 win over crosstown rival St. Bernard’s, while Albee had a big all-around night as the Wildcats knocked off Eureka 53-46 in a victory that sent shockwaves around the H-DNL.

We switch sports for our Team of the Week, which goes to the Del Norte boys and girls wrestlers.

The Warriors are also enjoying an outstanding season and continued to set the standard on the local mats with a tournament championship at last weekend’s North Coast Classic at Eureka High.

Caden Vance

Eureka Basketball, Junior

Vance was unstoppable against the Crusaders, as the Loggers remained hot on the way to their fifth win in seven games.

The junior forward is averaging a team-best 16.6 points a game and almost doubled that output on Tuesday night.

Things won’t be easy for the Loggers in the coming weeks as they battle for a spot in the Dick Niclai tournament, but if Vance continues to perform like that they’ll have a shot.

Kyla Albee

Ferndale Basketball, Junior

Albee has been one of the top athletes in the Little 4 this year and has moved seamlessly from soccer and volleyball to the basketball courts, where she continues to play a pivotal role for the high-flying Cats and follows in the footsteps of teammate Haidyn Fulton, who was one of our athletes of the week earlier in the season.

The Wildcats have a lot of talent this year, but few players have matched the all-around contributions of Albee, who had eight rebounds and six assists against the Loggers and continues to help set the tone at both ends of the court.

Del Norte Wrestling

The Warriors are rolling toward an H-DNL championship and a young roster is coming together quicker than anticipated.

Del Norte had another strong tournament showing at the weekend North Coast Classic, taking home five individual champions and placing first as a team in the boys tournament.

Alexander Osbourne (106 pounds), Andre Aflegue (113) and Brandon Jones (195) all won for the boys, and Savannah Williams (131) and Adenne Schaad (150) each won for the girls.

In addition to their five individual champions, the Warriors also had four wrestlers place second, including Eric Stansbury (123), Curtis Bartley (135) and RJ Loftin (173) for the boys, and Channey Schaad (111) for the girls.

Del Norte will compete at a dual meet tournament in Coos Bay this weekend before closing out the H-DNL dual meet season at Eureka next week.
