WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL — First start for Clifton as HSU and CR lose

Former Big 5 MVP Jadence Clifton got her first start for the Humboldt State women on Thursday night, as the Jacks fell 63-51 to Cal State San Bernardino at Lumberjack Arena.

Clifton, a freshman guard out of Del Norte, played a season-high 32 minutes in the loss, as the shorthanded HSU women played their first game in 24 days after seeing three games canceled last week because of COVID protocols.

The 2021 Del Norte graduate finished the game with three rebounds and an assist.

Madison Parry finished with a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds, as the Jacks overcame a slow start with a big second quarter before the visitors pulled away in the third quarter to open up an 11-point lead heading into the fourth.

The HSU women are now 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while San Bernardino improved to 6-7 and 3-4.

Butte 57, Redwoods 51

The Corsairs opened the Golden Valley Conference with a six-point loss at Butte on Thursday night, playing their first game since Dec. 29 because of COVID protocols around the GVC.

Ashley Quigley scored a team-high 16 points in the loss, while teammate Makaila Napoleon added 15 points.

With the loss, the Corsairs drop to 11-7 on the season and 0-1 in the GVC.

Butte improved to 12-6 and 2-0.

The CR women will play at Siskiyous on Saturday at 1 p.m.
