By Ray Hamill — You know you’re hot when you post back-to-back career nights within a week.
And that was the case with Del Norte senior Adriel Horton, who has been on fire on the basketball courts recently and is one of this week’s Humboldt Sports Athletes of the Week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.
With some of the Warriors players missing because of COVID protocols and injuries, Horton has stepped up to carry much of the load in the past two games and is enjoying the hottest streak in his young career.
Another player who has stepped up her game recently is Eureka junior Kira Morris, who has played a pivotal role in helping a shorthanded Loggers team tip off the Big 5 with three straight wins.
Our team of the week, meanwhile, goes to Eureka girls basketball, which is setting a blistering pace in the Big 5 despite playing shorthanded.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Eureka Basketball, Junior
Morris got the Big 5 off to a very impressive start with 29 points in a victory over Del Norte last week and followed that with two more strong performances against Fortuna and Arcata, giving her 50 points in her last three games.
The multi-sport standout is one of the Loggers’ most important players and is growing stronger as the season progresses.

Del Norte Basketball, Senior
The hottest player in the Big 5 over the past week, Horton has played a pivotal role in leading the Warriors to an impressive 2-0 start in league, as they get set for a huge game at Arcata on Thursday night.
Horton tipped off league play by scoring 19 points against Eureka last week and followed that with 21 points in a 71-39 win over Fortuna on Tuesday.
Both were career highs for the senior.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Eureka Girls Basketball
The Big 5 favorites are certainly living up to the billing.
Through three league games, the Loggers are 3-0 and have outscored their three opponents 166-106, including a pair of double-digit victories.
Even more impressively, a very deep squad has done so with just six players available for the first two games.
