The Del Norte Warriors hosted Arcata in an H-DNL dual meet in wrestling on Wednesday as they prepare for a weekend tournament at Anderson.
The Warriors won the meet with a number of forfeits, as well as the lone girls showdown, but the Tigers took four of the seven boys matches held
Arcata got victories from Isaac Weaver (113), Paolo Bosques-Paulet (138), Gabriel Ramos (145) and Ayden Casper (170), while Soren Lewis (152), Micah Malfovin (160) and Aidan Thomas (182) all won for the Warriors.
“Soren Lewis looked good. He put some stuff together,” Del Norte head coach Clinton Schaad said of the sophomore’s performance.
Malfovin and Thomas each won with a first-round pin.
In the lone girls matchup, Del Norte’s Channey Schaad defeated Arcata’s Gabrielle Ducate at 111 pounds.
The Warriors feature a very young team this season, with just four seniors and two juniors on hand, but the head coach likes a lot of what he’s seen from his wrestlers so far.
“We’re doing really well. We’re coming along quite a bit,” he said. “The main thing with us is we are a very young team. Over half are freshmen or sophomores, and they’re doing well.”
The Warriors have enjoyed strong showings at tournaments in Del Norte, McKinleyville, Grants Pass and Albany, with some of the top wrestlers in Oregon competing at Albany last week.
“We learned a lot,” the coach said of the Albany tournament. “It was two days and some of the best teams in Oregon, and we gained a lot of experience.”
After this week’s tournament in Anderson, the Huskies will return home to host Fortuna in a key H-DNL dual meet next week.
For Arcata, meanwhile, Ducate was competing in the sport for the first-time ever on Wednesday and turned in a memorable performance.
“She did so great and never gave up,” Arcata head coach Cass Bell said.
Weaver won his match with a tech, outscoring his opponent 17-2, while Bosques-Paulet, Ramos and Casper all won by pins.
