ATHLETES AND TEAMS OF THE WEEK — Wildcats, Huskies and Panthers take center stage

Submitted photo – The Ferndale Wildcats celebrate their second tournament win of the season at Kelseyville on Saturday night.

By Ray Hamill — It was a good week for the Ferndale Wildcats in girls basketball.

The Ferndale girls kept their unbeaten start to the new season going with three wins in three games at the Kelseyville tournament on the way to clinching their second tournament championship in three weeks.

And that gets them the nod for one of this week’s HumboldtSports.com Teams of the Week sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

Our second team of the week award goes to the surging McKinleyville boys basketball team, which clinched the Logger Classic with a fifth straight win over the weekend.

Another Wildcat, Jack Westfall, also enjoyed a stellar weekend at the Logger Classic.

Westfall has been on fire this season and scored 35 points against Brookings-Harbor to cap three strong days at the tournament.

And that earns him one of our athletes of the week.

McKinleyville’s Owen Hamm also is off to a flying start this season and also is one of athletes of the week after leading the Panthers to a tournament championship at the Logger Classic, where he was named tourney MVP.

Our female athlete of the week goes to Fortuna’s Isobel Crosswhite, who has been a consistent presence for the Huskies this season and played her best game yet in a 55-35 win over Yreka on Saturday.

Isobel Crosswhite

Fortuna Basketball, Senior

Good things were expected out of Crosswhite this season and she has not disappointed.

The senior standout has been one of the Huskies best and most consistent players through the early going, including a big showing at last weekend’s McKinleyville tournament.

Crosswhite was instrumental in the victory over Yreka, finishing with a game-high 22 points and setting the tone for the team all game long at both ends of the court.
