With two of their top players sidelined through injury, the St. Bernard’s girls suffered their first loss of the season at the Berean Christian tournament on Tuesday.

The Crusaders, who were missing Lele Tanuvasa and Laila Flovilus, fell 69-20 to Dixon.

“The girls continued to play very hard,” head coach Augie Valdez said. “I think it would have been a different game if we had those two.”

Amaiyah Her scored a team-high five points in the loss.

The injured players are day-to-day, although Valdez is not expecting Tanuvasa back this week.

“If there’s one good thing about St. Bernard’s kids, it’s that they always play hard no matter what,” the head coach said. “Even though we were missing Lele and Laila, and Emma (Wilson) at the end, they just did not quit.

“In terms of effort, they all played like all-stars tonight.”

The St. Bernard’s girls (6-1) have a bye in tournament play on Wednesday and will play in the consolation bracket on Thursday.
