They might still be a work in progress, but the Corsairs are certainly an entertaining team this season.
On Saturday, the College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team played in yet another close game, defeating Sierra College 72-70 to close out the Coach Tregs Classic.
The CR men have played eight games this season and four of them have been decided by three or less points, with the Corsairs winning three of them.
Brandon Johnson scored the winning basket on an “and one” with just 3.8 seconds remaining, off an assist from Zac Claus.
“About as gutsy of a win as anybody could draw up,” head coach Ryan Bisio said. “We’re banged up, raw emotionally and not firing on all cylinders, but still had the will to pull out a tough, tough win against a first-place team
Jon Nchekwube was instrumental in the win once again, scoring a team-high 19 points, as was Johnson, who added 17 points.
“BJ was tremendous,” Bisio said. “His maturity and ability to adapt to any situation is something we’re all grateful for.
“His success has been a long time coming and there’s much more in store for him.”
Donald Willis also had a good day with 11 points, while his twin brother Bradley finished with 10.
The 6-2 Corsairs will travel to Reedley for a game on Wednesday and will play at Merced on Friday.
