H-DNL teams get set for busy week of tournament play

By Ray Hamill — Get ready for a big week of local high school basketball as prep tournaments return to the North Coast for the first time in two years.

All 18 H-DNL varsity teams will be in action, as well as several JV and freshmen teams, including two varsity tournaments here on the North Coast.

The Arcata girls will host their annual tournament, which includes five local teams in the eight-team bracket and tips off on Thursday afternoon.

The McKinleyville boys will also host a tournament this week, with Hoopa and Arcata joining the Panthers in the seven-team field.

The Mack boys tournament will also tip off on Thursday and both local prep tourneys will run through Saturday.

The opening day schedule for the Arcata tournament is as follows …

McKinleyville vs. St. Bernard’s, 4 p.m.

Hoopa vs. Foothill, 5:30 p.m.

Arcata vs. Gold Beach, 7 p.m.

Fortuna vs Mazama, 8:30 p.m.

The opening day schedule for the McKinleyville tournament is as follows …

Hoopa vs. Lincoln, 5 p.m.

Arcata vs. Eagle Point, 6:30 p.m.

San Lorenzo vs, Gold Beach, 8 p.m.

The rest of the H-DNL teams will also all be in action this week.

The Eureka boys travel to the NorCal Tip-Off Tournament, opening against the host school, Whitney, on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The Eureka girls will also travel for the Placer High tourney, which is expected to have some quality teams.

The Loggers open against River Valley on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The Fortuna boys, meanwhile, will play at the St. Helena tournament, opening against the host school on Thursday evening at 8:30, while both the Del Norte boys and girls will play at the Yreka tournament, which also tips off on Thursday.

Both South Fork teams, meanwhile, opened their seasons against Potter Valley on Tuesday night and both will play at Fort Bragg on Thursday.

A busy week for the South Fork boys continues at the two-day Point Arena tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The St. Bernard’s boys also open the season this week, traveling to play at the Lake County Tournament and opening against Willits on Thursday night at 5 p.m.

The Ferndale boys also tipped off the new season against Hayfork on Tuesday night and will play Roseland Prep at the Calistoga tournament on Thursday at 8 p.m.

The Ferndale girls will also play at the Calistoga tournament this week, opening against St. Helena on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
