CR men win on a buzzer-beater; women advance to tourney decider

It was an exciting night of basketball for College of the Redwoods on Saturday, with both the men’s and women’s teams winning in dramatic fashion on the road.

The CR men improved to 3-0 after winning 59-58 with a buzzer-beater at Cabrillo, the No. 11 team in NorCal.

Zac Claus threw a full-court inbound pass to set up a Bradley Willis basket right as time expired.

The CR women also won a close game, edging the host team at the Mission College Tournament by a score of 72-69 and advancing to Sunday’s championship game.

Ashley Quigley was on fire for the second straight night, finishing with 25 points, including four 3-pointers.

Rachel Valdez added 14 points in the win and Gracie Betts 11, as the CR women improved to 2-0 on the season.

They will play Napa for the tournament championship on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Jon Nchekwube, meanwhile, continued to impress for the CR men and scored a team-high 18 points on Saturday.

Bradley Willis chipped in 17, including the game-winning basket.

Next up, the CR men will host Napa next Saturday.
