
Ray Hamill./HumboldtSports.com – The Fortuna and Arcata girls soccer teams will both be in action in the NCS playoffs this weekend.
By Ray Hamill — With the opening round of action in the books, 10 H-DNL teams remain alive in the North Coast Section soccer playoffs, with two all-local showdowns set for this weekend.
In Division-I boys action, No. 1 seed Fortuna had a first-round bye and will now open at home against No. 8 The Bay School on Saturday night.
The game will be part of a doubleheader of action at Husky Field, with the Fortuna girls also hosting Big 5 rival Eureka at 5 p.m.
The No. 3 Loggers have a higher seed than the No. 6 Huskies, but the game will be played at Fortuna because of the field conditions at Albee Stadium.
Big 5 girls champion Arcata, meanwhile, is a No. 1 seed in the girls D-I bracket and will host No. 8 St. Helena on Saturday at McKinleyville High at 1 p.m.
That game will be also be part of a doubleheader of NCS soccer action, with the No. 4 Mack girls also hosting No. 5 Credo on the same field at 3:30 p.m.
(Rounding out a busy day of action at Mack High, Arcata will also host Hoopa in a football game on the field at 7 p.m.)
The Eureka/Fortuna girls game is one of two all-local NCS soccer matchups this weekend, with No. 2 St. Bernard’s also hosting No. 3 Ferndale in the Division-III girls semifinal on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
Three other H-DNL teams will travel out of the area for NCS games, including both South Fork teams.
In Division II boys action, No. 9 South Fork will travel to play No. 1 Sonoma Academy on Saturday night at 7.
In D-III girls action, No. 4 South Fork will travel to play at No. 1 Upper Lake, also on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
And rounding out a busy weekend of action for the H-DNL teams, the Arcata boys will try to keep their playoff run going when they travel to play Making Waves at Salesian High in the D-I bracket.
The No. 7 Tigers got the better of Eureka in a penalty shootout after a thrilling showdown on Wednesday night.
Making Waves is the No. 2 seed and Saturday’s kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
