There were mixed fortunes for the H-DNL boys teams in Wednesday’s opening round of the NCS soccer playoffs.
In Division I, Arcata won a thriller against Eureka on a penalty shootout after both teams played a 3-3 tie through overtime.
Also in Division I, Del Norte fell 5-0 to The Bay School at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco, while a young McKinleyville team lost 12-0 at St. Helena.
In Division II, South Fork fared better and won 5-1 at Upper Lake to move on to a quarterfinal matchup at No. 1 seed Sonoma Academy on Saturday night.
Ryder York and Hector Torres each scored twice in Wednesday’s win, with Omar Villarreal also netting.
In Division III, St. Bernard’s fell 4-1 at home to Point Arena, with Ken Tran scoring the Crusaders’ only goal.
Fortuna is seeded No. 1 in Division I and will open at home to The Bay School on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
