By Ray Hamill — Two former H-DNL high school teammates faced off against each other in college football over the weekend, when Yuba College hosted Feather River.

Quarterback Daeden Taylor, who plays for Feather River, and defensive lineman Iziaah Payne, who plays for Yuba College, were reunited on opposite sides of the field, as Taylor and the Eagles ran out to a comfortable 38-7 victory.

The two players were teammates at Fortuna High.

Despite the loss, Payne had the more productive day of the two, finishing with four tackles along the defensive line, including one for a loss, as well as a block.

The former Huskies lineman has seen action in all five games for his team this fall.

With the win, Taylor and Feather River remain unbeaten on the season and are now 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the American Pacific 7 Conference, while Yuba is now 0-5 and 0-2.

Taylor and Payne, however, weren’t the only two players from the same H-DNL school to play each other on the college fields in recent weeks.

Former Eureka Loggers Cruz Montana and Trevor Carlin recently faced off when Lewis & Clark played Willamette, with Montana and the Pioneers winning 43-41.

Montana is enjoying a good season as the starting QB at Lewis & Clark, which has now won two straight and is 3-3.

Two other former Eureka Loggers — Tyce Mullins and Trevor Bell — also recently faced off against each other when Butte JC played Santa Rosa.

Mullins, a linebacker, had two tackles as the Roadrunners won the game 29-21, while Bell had one reception for 18 yards.

Butte is 4-3 on the season, while Santa Rosa remains winless at 0-7.

This past weekend also saw two former Del Norte teammates meet, when Shasta played Siskiyous.

Linebacker Anthony Slayton is enjoying an outstanding season for Shasta (4-2), which won the game 31-6, and he finished with a team-high four tackles in the win, including a tackle for a loss, as well as a fumble recovery.

Calleja, a QB, is also enjoying a big season at Siskiyous, which struggled offensively in the game and dropped to 1-5.
