By Ray Hamill — With one round of Big 5 soccer games still remaining, both the Fortuna boys and Arcata girls are inching closer to a league championship.
Both teams are unbeaten this season and could clinch the title as soon as this week.
The Huskies, who are the seven-time defending league champs and have not lost a game in league play in more than eight years, need two more wins to claim this year’s crown outright, or less if Arcata loses again along the way.
The Huskies (8-0 in the Big 5) host Del Norte on Wednesday, and regardless of the result of that game they can clinch the Big 5 title with a victory at Arcata on Saturday.
The Tigers are 5-2-1 in conference and did play Fortuna close when two sides met at Arcata a month ago, falling 3-2 after taking a two-goal lead.
So Arcata has shown it can play with Fortuna.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, however, the Huskies always seem to find a way to win close games and have taken all three matchups with them this season, which are the Arcata boys’ only three losses.
Arcata has a midweek bye before Saturday’s big game.
In girls action, the Tigers are 7-0-1 in league play and their closest challenger, Eureka, is 5-1-2.
The Arcata girls need three wins in their final four games to claim the championship outright, although they could do it in less depending on how Eureka fares down the stretch.
The two rivals meet in Eureka next week in a game that could be the title decider.
Arcata plays Ferndale in a midweek game this week, while Eureka plays at McKinleyville and Del Norte plays at Fortuna.
