BIG 5 VOLLEYBALL — Tigers remain in first; Huskies edge the Loggers

The Arcata Tigers inched a little closer to a Big 5 title in volleyball with a four-sets win over McKinleyville on Thursday night.

The Arcata girls won 25-17, 27-29, 25-16, 25-16.

With the victory the Tigers are now 5-1 in the Big 5 with two matches remaining against Eureka and Del Norte.

Both Fortuna (4-2) and Del Norte (3-2) are also still in contention.

Sydney Hasselquist, who has been enjoying a very good season for Arcata, continued to impress against Mack, finishing with 12 kills and four aces, while teammate Abby Costello-Anderson also had a big night and finished with eight kills.

Caroline Dieker added six kills and three blocks, while Lily Rust-Kelley had 10 digs and two kills.

Nora Talty rounded out a solid all-around team performance for the league leaders with 27 assists and three aces.

The Tigers, who have now won five straight league games, play at Eureka next Thursday, where a victory will guarantee them at least a share of the league title.

The Fortuna Huskies, meanwhile, returned to their winning ways in Big 5 volleyball on Thursday, edging Eureka in five sets to end a two-game conference losing streak.

With the win, the Fortuna girls improved to 4-2 in the Big 5 and keep their championship hopes alive with two matches remaining.

Juniors Emily Maloney and Kylee Fennell both had a big night in the win, with Maloney leading the team defensively and Fennell finishing with six kills.

For Eureka, Mariah Napoleon finished with a team-high 12 kills and six aces, while Aniah Gaither had seven kills.

Trinity Abercrombie also had a good night with a team-high 20 serves, including two aces, as well as two kills.

Next up, on Tuesday, Eureka plays at Del Norte, while Fortuna hosts McKinleyville.
