Tigers take over sole possession of first in the Big 5

The Arcata Tigers are alone in first.

The defending Big 5 champions won their fourth straight conference match in volleyball on Tuesday night, posting a key and impressive win at Fortuna.

The Tigers won 25-14, 25-13, 25-16, handing the Huskies their second straight loss in Big 5 play.

That result, coupled with McKinleyville’s straight sets victory at home to Del Norte leaves the Tigers alone atop the standings with three matches remaining.

Nora Talty continued to impress for the Arcata girls, finishing with 18 Assists and four kills, as did Sydney  Hasselquist, who had six kills and three aces.

Caroline Dieker also had a good night, posting five kills and three blocks, while Olivia Railsback had four kills and three aces and Lily Rust-Kelley had 15 digs.

Taylor Appy rounded out a good team performance with 12 service points, as the Tigers improved to 4-1 in the Big 5 and 16-5 overall.

At McKinleyville, the Panthers won their second straight conference match and appear to be building some momentum.

The Mack girls defeated Del Norte, 25-20, 27-25, 25-16.

Raina Ausburn had a big night in the win, finishing with seven kills and just three errors on 21 attempts, while teammate Allie Egbert added six kills on 10 attempts.

Maddie Rustin and Camryn Pinard both also continued to impress.

Rustin had five aces and just two errors on 19 service attempts, while Pinard had seven aces and two errors on 15 service attempts.

Big 5 play continues on Thursday, with McKinleyville playing at Arcata and Fortuna traveling to Eureka.
