BOYS SOCCER ROUNDUP — Eureka, Arcata tie; Del Norte wins again

File photo – The Arcata Tigers and McKinleyville Panthers both played on Saturday.

The Del Norte Warriors are beginning to click.

On Saturday, they won for the second time this week, shutting out McKinleyville 5-0.

Just as impressively, it was the team’s second straight shutout against Big 5 opposition, and five different Del Norte players found the back of the net.

“The boys gave a commanding performance from start to finish and I am looking forward to seeing the team reaching greater heights as the season goes on,” head coach David Sanyaolu said.

Jin Vue, Saxon Taylor and Edwin Zepeda each scored in the opening half to give the Warriors a three-goal advantage at the break, before Brandt Pennington and Rancho Contreras added to the lead in the second half.

Eureka 0, Arcata 0

The Loggers tied for the fourth time in seven Big 5 games this season at Arcata on Saturday.

Neither team was able to create many chances, but it was an evenly-matched game with some sound defense by both.

“Our defense was solid and kept them to very limited chances,” Arcata head coach John Davidson said. “It was fun to watch.”

Freshman Trenton Gerber continued to impress for the Loggers and is enjoying a good debut high school campaign while filling in at multiple positions for his team

“It was an evenly matched game with both teams having few opportunities to score,” Eureka head coach Eddie Garcia said.
