The Arcata Tigers continued to roll with another big statement win on Wednesday, defeating the Huskies 8-0 in Fortuna.
In three games over the past eight days, the Tigers have outscored their opponents 21-3, including posting two key Big 5 wins.
With Wednesday’s victory, the Arcata girls are now 6-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Big 5.
Head coach Patrick Stranahan described it as the Tigers’ “best effort yet,” with his team opening up a five-goal lead before halftime.
Alia Prentiss continued to impress in attack, scoring three of her team’s goals and assisting on another, while Kyla Berman added two goals and an assist.
Zoe Macknicki also scored twice, with Tildy Macdonald rounding out the scoring.
Soquel Macdonald and Sionna Khattab each also had an assist.
“Props to Fortuna for fighting to the bitter end,” Stranahan added. “There’s no quit in them.”
With the loss, Fortuna is now 2-4 in the Big 5.
McKinleyville 2, South Fork 1
This matchup was a little closer this time around.
After falling 11-0 to the Panthers earlier in the season, the Cubs came close to tying them at McKinleyville on Wednesday night, with Soffia Reyes netting the winner for the home team just 15 minutes from time.
“South Fork played way better than the first time we played them,” McKinleyville head coach Adam Canepa said. “They were creating chances at the end and almost tied it at the end, so hats off to them for making us earn it.”
Freshman Gabby Watson scored her first-ever high school goal for Mack in the first half after starting in place of standout striker Thea Trout, who was missing for the game but is expected back for the next game on Saturday.
Kathryn Tinney assisted on the goal, crossing to Watson, who netted with a well-placed first-time shot.
“We played alright,” Canepa said. “I would say it wasn’t our best game, but we played well at moments.”
The in-form Cora Allen continued to impress for the home team in defense and midfield, as did consistent defender Bria Ferreira, who also saw time in midfield.
Junior Summer Contreras, who is enjoying another standout season for the Cubs, gave her team the lead early in the game on a through ball from Kaylee Cotter, before the Panthers battled to tie things up before halftime.
“We played our hearts out,” said South Fork head coach Ann Constantino, whose team was shorthanded because of COVID protocols. “We had lots of good chances, had our share of possession and never quit despite having just one sub.”
Lyndsee Brewer continued to shine in goal for the visitors, making 14 saves, including a couple of spectacular stops to keep her team in the game.
Eureka 5, Del Norte 0
The Loggers won their fourth straight game and kept their unbeaten start to the season going with a shutout victory in Crescent City.
Lila Ekholdt netted twice in the win and assisted on another goal, while Lorena Hernandez continued her recent good run with a goal and two assists.
Saedra Joseph and Ginny Brooks each also scored in the win, while Ella Tollefson also had an assist.
With the win, which was their fourth shutout of the season, the Eureka girls improved to 4-0-2 in the Big 5 and 5-0-2 overall.
