The Fortuna Huskies and players from several other local high school basketball programs are keeping busy this summer and building for the future.

This past weekend, the Fortuna boys took home bragging rights from an all-local summer 16U basketball tournament at the Bear River Recreation Center.

The three-day event featured some of the top talent from Humboldt and Del Norte counties, with seven teams in action.

A busy few days featured 13 games, many of which were highly competitive, as well as a 3-point shootout.

The Fortuna JV squad took on McKinleyville in the championship game, edging their local rivals 62-59 in what was an exciting and back-and-forth game with several lead changes.

The popular 3-point contest was won by McKinleyville’s Cody Whitmeir, who beat out a big field of 25 for the victory.

Other teams competing in the tournament included Crescent City, Eureka, Trey City, Humboldt Hawks and the Fortuna Frosh.
