Southern Humboldt native Aidan Ayers is just 13 years old but appears to have a bright future ahead of him in local sports, particularly on the wrestling mats.
Last week, Ayers was named the Rocky Mountain Nationals Rookie of the Year after an outstanding year of tournaments, during which time he won 12 of the 14 events he traveled to around the West Coast.
Ayers is a member of Cass Bell’s Institute of Combat youth wrestling team, which is coming off a big showing at the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Las Vegas.
Our Team of the Week, meanwhile goes to the Northern Humboldt Giants American Legion baseball team, which has been on fire all summer.
This past week, the Giants won the district title in dominating fashion, and they are competing against the top teams from NorCal this weekend at an end-of-season tournament in Fairfield.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Ayers, who will attend Ferndale Elementary in the fall, is coming off a sensational rookie season on the mats.
The 13-year-old was victorious in all three of his matches at the recent Rocky Mountain Nationals, winning yet another tournament championship and earning national recognition in the process.
The young Ayers also competes in youth football and will play for the Ferndale Mustangs AAA this fall.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Northern Humboldt Giants
The Giants have lost just four of their 37 games heading into a Friday night showdown against Yuba at the end-of-season tournament.
Clearly the most dominating American Legion baseball team on the North Coast this summer, head coach Troy Ghisetti and his players have been close to unstoppable and also have posted impressive victories over top teams from out of the area.
The Giants will be hoping to close out on a winning note this weekend.
