By Ray Hamill — The H-DNL recently named its all-league team in volleyball, as well as listing several honorable mentions.
After a shortened COVID season with no league champions crowned, each of the seven teams to compete were awarded two all-league selections.
For the Arcata Tigers, who led the way in league play and lost just once all season, seniors Ella Day and Avery Thornburgh were both named all-league.
Thornburgh was a three-year varsity player with the Tigers, who were the defending Big 5 champions this spring, and a dominant middle blocker.
“She is enthusiastic,” Arcata head coach Laurie Griffith said. “One of the loudest cheerers, and she loves to amp up the team. Everyone loves playing volleyball with Avery!”
Day was a standout outside hitter with a powerful jump serve.
Del Norte’s Caroline Hamm and Renni Loftin each also were named all-league, as were Eureka’s Madison Broese and Cambelle Suchanek.
For Fortuna, Saige Grundman and Renee Metz got the nod, with McKinleyville’s Kayley Armstrong and Cameron Heenan rounding out the Big 5 contingent of all-stars.
Only two Little 4 teams competed this year, with two all-league selections each.
For Hoopa, Tannah O’Rourke and Tatianna Colegrove get the nod, along with St. Bernard’s Madelyn Shanahan and Lele Tanuvasa.
Honorable Mentions
Arcata — Abby Costello-Anderson
Del Norte — Sarah Peters
