Kokko Figueiredo and North Carolina Central took another step towards qualifying for the NCAA Division-I baseball tournament with a big victory to open the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday.
The former Fortuna Husky and College of the Redwoods standout led the way at the plate for the Eagles in a 9-4 win over Delaware State, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
The standout senior gave his team the lead on two separate occasions.
He opened the scoring for the Eagles in the bottom of the first and followed that with a big RBI single in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie.
For the season, Figueiredo is batting a team-best .346 and also leads the Eagles in RBIs with 34.
He also has eight doubles and five home runs.
Figueiredo and the Eagles will continue the four-team double-elimination tournament with a semifinal matchup on Friday.
The winner will advance to next week’s NCAA tournament.
