Loggers respond in style, sweep two at Fortuna

File photo – After losing for the first time this season on Wednesday, the Loggers battled back to win two games at Fortuna on Friday night.

After tasting defeat for the first time this season on Wednesday, the Eureka Loggers responded in style with a doubleheader sweep in H-DNL baseball at Fortuna on Friday night.

The Loggers won game one 9-6, and took the nightcap 9-1.

The Eureka bats came out swinging, with several players contributing at the plate after the team was held to just three hits in a 3-1 defeat against the same team two days earlier.

In game one, Parker Rodgers, Jackson Giacone, Myles Standish, Brayden Youkey, Zac Anderson and Hayden Bode each had two hits for the Loggers, including triples by both Rodgers and Youkey.

Keenan Morris, Rogan Bode and Connor Johnson each also had a hit.

Giacone got the win in relief of starter Hayden Bode, as the Loggers broke a late 6-6 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Giacone pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and no walks, while striking out three.

Hayden Bode allowed six hits and two walks in five innings while striking out four.

For Fortuna, Branson Gans had a big game, finishing 3-for-4, while also pitching six innings for a no-decision.

Wyatt Wilson took the loss in relief.

Wilson, Daniel Osborne, Regan Nyberg, Aaron Head-Mason, Matt Berti and Matt Letter each had a hit.

Game two wasn’t as close, with the Loggers taking control early and never really appearing in danger of losing, with Ethan Pesch in control on the mound.

Pesch pitched six innings for the win, allowing just one hit and two walks and striking out five.

Gavin Brooks pitched one inning in relief.

The ever-dangerous Rodgers again led the way at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Giacone capped a big night with two more hits.

Anderson, Morris, Youkey and Standish each also had a hit, including a double by Youkey.

Joey Quen took the loss on the mound for the Huskies.

Letter and Cody Sauers had the Huskies’ only hits of the game.

“There was a heavy mist and both teams had to deal with it,” Fortuna head coach Andy Olsen said. “I thought Joey and Ethan Pesch both did a very good job. It was Humboldt County baseball weather.”

With the wins, the Loggers improved to 9-1, while Huskies are now 7-4.
