By Ray Hamill — Two of the top pitchers on the North Coast this spring will face off at Newburg Park in Fortuna on Wednesday night, as the Huskies host the St. Bernard’s Crusaders.
First pitch is set for 7 p.m., with Nick Dugan taking the mound for the Crusaders and Branson Gans getting the start for the Huskies.
Both teams are among the best on the North Coast this spring as well, with Fortuna coming in with a record of 5-2 after a 14-3 win at Hoopa on Tuesday night.
The Crusaders, meanwhile, are 5-1 and have won five straight on the strength of some outstanding pitching, including from Dugan, the top 2022 high school prospect in the state, according to PerfectGame.org.
Both Dugan and Gans are 2-0 this spring.
Gans has won in both of his appearances, with the senior settling into each game and becoming more dominant as the game progressed.
He has an ERA of 2.33 through 12 innings.
Dugan, meanwhile, has been everything you would expect from a junior who has already committed to play at Stanford after graduation next year.
Like Gans, he is 2-0, and he has yet to allow a run in 10.2 innings, while striking out a remarkable 27 batters.
