The Fortuna Huskies began the season as the team to beat on the North Coast, and they ended it as the team to beat on the North Coast.
Much as they have for most of the past decade.
On Saturday, they capped an undefeated season with a 6-1 win over McKinleyville, and it has now been more than seven years since they have tasted defeat against H-DNL opposition.
“Knock on wood,” head coach Daniel Holmes said. “That’s a testament to the boys buying into what we’re doing.”
Saturday’s win was their second over McKinleyville this season.
The ever-reliable Sergio Marquez scored a hat trick, with additional goals from Antonio Garcinuno and Junior Cruz, as well as a fantastic strike from RJ Rexford.
“That was our goal of the season for sure,” Holmes said of the Rexford’s goal.
Rexford got possession at the edge of the penalty area, slipped past a defender before beating the goalie one-on-one.
“It was a fluid move,” Holmes said.
Overall, it was another hugely successful season for the local soccer dynasty, which would have claimed an eighth straight league title if one was being handed out.
“I’m super excited for all of them to get to play,” Holmes said. “And not just our boys, but all of the kids who got to play.”
