The Huskies honored a stellar senior class before kickoff on Saturday, before beating Arcata 3-0 to keep their unbeaten record in tact.
Sergio Marquez netted twice in the win, while Jack Honsal scored on a 40-yard blast from well outside the box.
“We played a better game today,” said head coach Daniel Holmes, whose team improved to 7-0. “We had a lot of linking and a lot of possession.”
Seniors Honsal, Marquez, Angel Ornelas and Oscar Avendano in particular have been instrumental in the program’s incredible success over the past four years.
“As a group they were committed,” Holmes said of the senior class. “They were always out there and bought into the idea of building a legacy.”
Fellow seniors Manny Merez, Gio Martinez, Armando Ramirez, Junior Cruz and Edgar Herrera were all honored before kickoff as well.
For Arcata, Ryven Schlictling, Lucien Steinkemp and Dillon Rouse all played well in defeat.
“I’m so proud of those guys,” head coach John Davidson said.
Eureka 3, Del Norte 0
The Loggers got some payback for a season-opening defeat to Del Norte with a shutout victory on Saturday.
Tomas Paoli scored the only goal of the opening half, netting on a shot from outside the box to break the deadlock shortly before the interval.
“In the second half we were a lot more composed and started combining,” Eureka head coach Eddie Garcia said.
The second goal came on a nice build up from the back, with Luis Romero scoring off a Ty Bauer pass.
Jesse Bravo scored the final goal, his third in two games, while teammate Jesus Parra was a standout defensively once again.
Midfielder Ian Bennett also had a good game in the win, while freshman Diego Rivas impressed in his first start.
“We didn’t get a lot of things right today defensively and offensively,” Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu said. “And Eureka showed more desire and were more adept at finishing than us They were the better side today.”
