Corsairs get approval for fans to attend Saturday’s season opener

By Ray Hamill — College of the Redwoods received the go-ahead on Friday morning to allow a limited number of fans attend this weekend’s season openers in baseball.

The Corsairs will host Shasta College in a doubleheader on Saturday, with a handful of local players on both teams.

According to CR Athletics Director Bob Brown, the Golden Valley Conference ADs met on Friday morning and gave approval for teams to allow fans as long as they follow county guidelines.

Saturday’s games will take place at Bomber Field in Eureka, with first pitch scheduled for noon.

With teams only allowed to travel on the same day of competition, however, the start time could be pushed back if there is any delay in the Shasta players getting here.

Spectators are being encouraged to get to the field early and are reminded that COVID guidelines will have to be followed, including the wearing of masks, social distancing and no intermingling with players or coaches.

Saturday’s doubleheader will feature a nine-inning game in the opener and a seven-inning second game.

This will be the last CR athletics home event until May 6, with the majority of the Corsairs’ baseball and softball games scheduled to take place in Redding because of the same-day travel limitations.

The CR baseball team has just three scheduled home games all season.
