By Ray Hamill — Hailey Dolcini capped a big weekend on the softball diamond with a season-high in strikeouts on Sunday, helping Fresno State to a three-game sweep over San Jose State.
After pitching a no-hitter against the Spartans on Saturday, the former Big 5 MVP struck out 14 batters a day later, while allowing just three hits in seven innings.
For her efforts, Dolcini was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the fourth consecutive week, tying a conference record.
For the weekend, the Ferndale native had 26 strikeouts and held the Spartan bats to a .071 average.
The red-hot Bulldogs have won 13 of their last 14 games, with Dolcini winning on her last eight appearances.
For the season she is now 9-3 with a save and has an ERA of just 1.19.
The Bulldogs are just outside the top-25 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll.
Fresno State will play on the road at Utah State this weekend.
Christensen shines for McPherson
Dolcini’s former Fortuna High teammate Jenna Christensen is also enjoying a big season on the college softball diamond.
Christensen is hitting .326 for the McPherson College Bulldogs in Kansas, with three home runs and three doubles on the season.
Christensen plays catcher and third base and has appeared in 16 of McPherson’s 18 games this season.
The senior also has 13 RBIs for the 10-8 Bulldogs, an NAIA program.
