By Ray Hamill — No matter where he goes, Thomas Nelson just continues to win basketball games, and that trend is showing no sign of slowing down.
This week, Nelson and his new teammates at Flagler College in Florida will compete in the NCAA Division-II Sweet 16 when they take on Alabama Huntsville on Tuesday evening.
The Saints are 16-2 and the No. 1 seed in their region.
Nelson, a junior, has played just limited minutes in his first season with the nationally-ranked and senior-heavy Saints, but he certainly has brought his winning touch to the program.
In the past five seasons, Nelson has won five conference titles with four different teams, while posting a remarkable overall record of 110-24 and playing a significant role on most of those teams.
Before joining the Saints, Nelson played two seasons at Arcata High, one at Santa Rosa JC and one year at College of the Redwoods, where he was named all-state on a dynamic Corsairs team that played to packed houses here on the North Coast.
The Saints are ranked No. 8 in the nation in the most recent coaches poll and appear to have a legitimate shot at reaching the NCAA Division-II Final Four.
