By Ray Hamill — The Del Norte Warriors packed quite a punch in the offensive backfield last season, and they’re expected to do so again this year.

Senior running back Levi Cox Cooley is back for one final campaign with the team after being named Big 4 Offensive MVP as a junior, and he has been named on the preseason Small Schools All-State Player Watch List.

He is the only current H-DNL player and one of just eight running backs in the state included on the prestigious small schools list.

In 2019, Cox Cooley ran for 1,667 yards on 231 carries for an average of 7.2 yards a carry, while also contributing 215 yards in receptions and 14 total TDs.

He led a trio of bruising Del Norte backs, which also included seniors Chase Blackburn and Kobe Mitchell and thrived behind a dominating line, as the Warriors won a first ever North Coast Section championship and made it all the way to a state bowl game.

Del Norte opens the new season at home to Fortuna on March 19.
