ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Champions and perfection highlight big week

By Ray Hamill — A big week for local sports was highlighted by a couple of championship events and a little slice of perfection.

In boys tennis, Arcata’s Yasko Massias capped a big season for him and the Tigers by winning the H-DNL No. 1 singles championship at McKinleyville High on Saturday.

Another local athlete enjoying a stellar season is former Fortuna Husky Hailey Dolcini, who continues to light it up in college softball by throwing a perfect game against Sac State.

And those outstanding performances earn Massias and Dolcini our athletes of the week honors.

In team competition, meanwhile, the Fortuna Huskies capped an impressive campaign in boys cross country with a first-place showing at Friday’s H-DNL Championships.

And that earns them our co-team of the week honors, along with the Arcata girls golf squad, which closed out a dominating few weeks at Beau Pre last week.

TEAMS OF THE WEEK

Fortuna Boys Cross Country

Arcata Girls Golf

There may not be any official league champions crowned by the H-DNL this year, but that doesn’t take from what both the Arcata girls golf and Fortuna boys cross country teams achieved over the past few weeks.

Both squads placed first in league last week.

The Arcata girls capped a dominating season on the local golf courses with another big showing at Beau Pre in the season finale, topping the field by an incredible 371 strokes over the five weeks.

In cross country, meanwhile, the Fortuna boys edged out rivals Eureka by just four points in their season finale, the third time to do so in four races against the Loggers this season.
