Celebrating the first H-DNL White Stars in over a year

By Ray Hamill — The H-DNL honored a host of all-league selections this past week as the first sports to return after the long shutdown concluded their seasons.

Because of the pandemic and the shortened unusual seasons, the H-DNL will not officially crown league champions this year, but they are honoring all-league selections.

And that’s good news for the top-seven finishers in boys and girls cross country and girls golf, each of which just completed five weeks of competition.

In cross country, the league championship meet was held in wet conditions at the Eureka Municipal Golf Course on Friday, but that didn’t dampen any spirits.

“I was really impressed with all the runners from all the schools,” Fortuna head coach Daniel Holmes said of the season. “The sportsmanship was outstanding, and there was that vibe of being the first team sport back after COVID.”

In addition to boys champion Collin Stockwell, two other Huskies received the coveted White Stars, along with four Eureka Loggers.

The recipients were …

1 — Collin Stockwell (Fortuna)

2 — Ian Bennett (Eureka)

3 — Antonio Garcinuno (Fortuna)

4 — Kaelen Docherty (Eureka)

5 — Logan Calvert (Fortuna)

6 — Thomas Becannon (Eureka)

7 — Daniel Shaver (Eureka)

On the girls side, Anneli Macdonald was every bit as impressive as Stockwell this season, winning all four of her races as well.

The Arcata Tigers dominated all season and finished with four of the seven all-league selections.

In girls golf, meanwhile, McKinleyville senior Isabella Sundberg also dominated this season, winning all five rounds in H-DNL action.

On Thursday, she capped a fantastic season with another strong showing in the final round at Beau Pre Golf Course.

But Sundberg wasn’t the only golfer to be recognized, with several others also enjoying outstanding seasons, particularly a group of talented Arcata Tigers.
