Nelson adjusting to life in Florida, as NCAA tourney approaches

By Ray Hamill — It’s been a season of adjustment on and off the basketball court for Thomas Nelson, but, according to his former coach at College of the Redwoods, it’s been a good experience for him.

After graduating from CR last summer, Nelson took his talents to Florida, where he has seen limited action off the bench on a senior-heavy Flagler College team that is ranked No. 14 in the nation, according to the latest Division-II NABC Coaches poll.

The former Arcata High standout, who was an all-state selection at CR, has had to adjust to life in a different state, as well as stylistic changes on the court.

But CR head coach Ryan Bisio believes the experience will benefit Nelson down the road.

“He’s hanging in there and he’s getting better,” said Bisio, who keeps in regular touch with his former player. “He’s getting a lot of good experience.”

Nelson has appeared in four games for the Saints, who are 12-2 with two games remaining in the regular season.

The Saints then play in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, beginning next Thursday, and appear to be a lock for the NCAA Tournament later in March.
