The Arcata Tigers’ experience and youth was on display on Wednesday morning, as they improved to 3-0 in H-DNL boys tennis with a 5-0 win at McKinleyville.
Senior Tristan Washington won at No. 1 singles, defeating McKinleyville’s Logan Maher, 6-3, 6-1 in the closest match of the day.
Washington has been battling a minor injury this season but appears to be back to full health again with a strong performance to lead his team.
“He’s coming off an injury, but he seems to be doing quite well right now,” Arcata head coach Onawa Gutierrez said. “He’s looking really good again and it’s good to see him back out there.”
At No. 3 singles, meanwhile, freshman Bruin Nave got the better of Derek Ray, 6-2, 6-0, in his first-ever high school match.
“He played a great first match for the team,” Gutierrez said of Nave, who brings some tennis experience to the Tigers despite his youth. “We’re really excited to see where he goes over the next few years.”
At No. 2 singles, junior Finn Murphy also won in straight sets, defeating McKinleyville’s Jack Clancy, 6-1, 6-0.
“He played great,” Gutierrez said of the speedy Murphy, who got his second win of the season and has lost just two games in four sets. “His serve is improving a lot this season, and he’s been working on just his overall court game.”
Arcata won the other singles matches by forfeit.
Next up, on Saturday McKinleyville hosts Fortuna and Arcata hosts Ferndale.
