By Ray Hamill — A pair of former College of the Redwoods teammates and Big 5 rivals faced off in an NAIA women’s basketball showdown in Rocklin recently.
Eureka’s Bobbie Purify, who is a senior at William Jessup University, and Arcata’s Breesia Northern, a junior at Simpson University, each featured off the bench when the two schools met on Jan. 20.
Northern is listed as a redshirt junior, but in a season where players are being given an extra year of eligibility because of COVID-19 she has seen action in the Redhawks’ past three games, including back-to-back starts.
The former Arcata Tiger made her NAIA debut against Purify and the Warriors, scoring five points in 19 minutes.
William Jessup won the game 78-43, with Purify finishing with three points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal in 15 minutes.
Purify has appeared in all 12 games for the Warriors (5-7) this season and is averaging 5.2 points on 57 percent shooting.
The two former teammates played together at CR during the 2018/19 season after Purify graduated Eureka in 2016 and Northern graduated from Arcata in 2018.
Northern has started the past two games for the Redhawks (0-4), both against the College of Idaho, finishing with four rebounds, three assists and a steal in her first start.
William Jessup plays two games against Ottawa University out of Arizona this weekend, while Simpson plays two games at Vanguard University.
