By Ray Hamill — A pair of former H-DNL volleyball standouts are succeeding in college on and off the court.
On Friday, Arcata’s Kaylin Campbell and Del Norte’s Paula Mello, both now sophomores at College of the Redwoods, were named all-state scholar athletes for 2019.
To qualify, a student athlete must have a GPA of at least 3.5.
Mello, a 2019 Del Norte graduate who plays outside hitter, had a GPA of 3.9, while Campbell, who was also named all-conference for her play on the court, had a GPA of 3.6.
Campbell, a 2018 Arcata graduate who red-shirted at Humboldt State for a season before joining the Corsairs last year, has become a dominating force at middle blocker at CR.
After undergoing knee surgery shortly after the 2019 season, the former Tigers star is expected to be fully healthy and even stronger for the CR women next season, which is tentatively scheduled for the new year.
The all-state scholar athletes were named by the Community College Women’s Volleyball Coaches Association and included 110 student athletes from 28 colleges around the state.
