By Ray Hamill — A trio of former H-DNL players will be back in action at the Division-I college level in the coming days, including Eureka’s Isaak Gutierrez, who plays for the University of New Mexico.
The sophomore offensive lineman and the Lobos are still looking for their first win of the season and are 0-2 after falling 39-33 at Hawaii last weekend.
This coming Saturday, Gutierrez and the Lobos will play against Nevada in a game that will be televised nationally on Fox Sports 2.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
Two former McKinleyville players — Kyle Spalding and Bryce Petersen — will also be in action in the coming days.
Spalding is a standout left tackle for San Diego State, which suffered its first loss of the season against San Jose State last Friday, falling 28-17.
“They came out to play and we didn’t quite match it,” the senior told media after the loss, which dropped the Aztecs to 2-1.
San Diego will try to get back on track against Hawaii this Saturday (1 p.m.) in a game that is not scheduled to be televised.
Petersen, meanwhile, is a senior center for a young Akron Zips team, which dropped to 0-2 with a 24-10 loss against Ohio on Tuesday.
Petersen and the Zips will look for their first win at Kent State next Tuesday in a game that will be broadcast nationally on ESPN-U at 4 p.m.
