CIF pushes back high school sports seasons

By Ray Hamill — As expected, the California Interscholastic Federation announced on Monday morning that the fall high school sports seasons have been pushed back due to ongoing concerns over COVID-19 and will now likely begin in December.

The three traditional CIF sports season — fall, winter and spring — will now be condensed into two seasons, and will run from December to late June.

Locally, that means football, cross country and volleyball will run from December to March or April, with basketball, wrestling, soccer, cross country, golf, tennis, track and field, baseball and softball all competing at the same time in the spring.

Each individual section in the state will be responsible for releasing its own schedule and starting dates.

For football, the last date for North Coast Section playoffs will be April 10, with the state playoffs scheduled to take place the following weekend.

The Cross country and volleyball seasons will be completed by the end of March.

Section playoffs for soccer will be held in late May, with basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball and track and field all scheduled to run well into June.
