By Ray Hamill — Kaylee Murphy has been recognized for an outstanding season playing basketball for UC Santa Cruz after being named American Collegiate Athletic Association women’s player of the year.
Murphy, a former Eureka Logger, has been sensational all winter for the Banana Slugs, who lost the conference championship game to Finlandia on Sunday.
Murphy is seventh in the nation in rebounds in NCAA Division-III ball with 12.9 a game, according to the NCAA website, and has 14 double-doubles on the season.
She is also averaging 13.2 points a game and led the conference in blocks with 54.
Her 319 rebounds this season smashed her own school record for a single season (240), which she set as a freshman.
The Banana Slugs are 14-12 after falling 60-50 on Sunday.
Murphy, a 2018 Eureka graduate, finished with nine points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
In Saturday’s 74-55 semifinal win over Mount Mary, Murphy finished with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds.
